ABOUT MATILDA MICHELL

Matilda Michell’s painting practice is a testament to her lifelong love of classical painting.
Her work is a beautiful blend of traditional techniques and contemporary sensibilities, with modern subjects often introduced into the traditional still life context.
Michell’s manipulation of classical compositional rules and juxtaposition of subjects that ‘clash’ in some way is both daring and masterful, resulting in a balance of ‘new’ and ‘old’ elements that is both refreshing and grounded in tradition.
Her work is a testament to her skill as an artist, with each painting taking on a life of its own through her layering process that creates a sense of depth and atmosphere.
Michell’s ability to prioritize composition, balance, harmony and sentiment above strictly accurate observation is what sets her apart from other artists working today.
